Thilak is currently a principal research fellow at the University of Queensland.

He previously had a long career in water and agriculture policy in the Department of Agriculture and ABARES. In these roles, he played instrumental roles in the development of the National Water Initiative, the Murray-Darling Basin Plan and the National Food Plan.
